Is a colleague at work? The dot in a 1:1 chat

Edit

In a chat with one person, a small coloured dot beside their name shows whether they are at work. It comes from the attendance clock, so you can see at a glance whether a colleague is in before you wait for an answer or walk over to their desk.

Where you see it

  • The chat panel on the myWork website: open a chat with one person; the dot is in the top bar, before their name.
  • myChat24 for Windows, version 1.0.30 or newer: open a chat with one person; the dot is after their name, at the top of the chat. Download or update myChat24 from My Profile -> Apps (see My Profile).
  • The myChat24 phone app gets it with its next update.

There is no dot in a group chat or in a record's channel: those have many people in them, so no single person's status applies. Point at the dot with the mouse to read what it means in words, for example "Thandi Mokoena is clocked in".

What the colours mean

  • Green - clocked in. They are at work right now.
  • Amber - was in earlier today. They clocked in today, but are clocked out now: at lunch, out on a site visit, or gone home for the day. Amber stays until midnight, so amber in the evening usually means they have left.
  • Grey - not in today. They have not clocked in today. That can mean they have not arrived yet, they are on leave, or it is their day off. The dot does not say which.

How it changes through the day

The dot through a working day: each day starts grey, not in today. Clocking in turns it green. Clocking out, for lunch, a site visit or to go home, turns it amber: was in earlier today. Clocking in again turns it green again. At midnight it starts grey again. Only in a chat with one person, never in a group.

Where the status comes from

The dot reads the same clock punches as the Checked In badge on the Dashboard (see Dashboard: the My Day tab), so the two always agree. A punch at a clocking terminal counts, and so does clocking in from the Dashboard (see Clock in and out remotely).

In myChat24 it updates by itself, within about a minute of someone clocking in or out, and straight away when you come back to the window. On the website it is checked again when the chat refreshes: if it looks out of date, close the chat and open it again.

Good to know

  • Grey but they are here? They have probably not clocked in yet, or forgot to. Once they clock in, the dot turns green.
  • Someone who does not clock in at all (for example a person who is not on attendance) always shows grey.
  • What others see about you: anyone in a chat with you sees only these three colours. They do not see your clock times, your hours or why you are away.
  • Why not leave or lunch by name? The dot only knows the clock. Managers can see who in their team is on leave (see Manage your team's leave).
